A few of our business presentations will focus on how India can increase its oilseed and edible oil production. For example, does biotechnology have a role in boosting soybean production? What can really be done about small farm sizes, which prevents economies of scale? Can irrigation be improved? And what can be done to help farmers adopt technology to improve productivity? There is one estimate that adoption of the improved technology could result in a 50% increase in soya yields including the use of certified seeds, replacement of seed every three years, proper soil nutrient management, farm mechanisation and efficient water management through micro-irrigation.

Another interesting focus will be on castor oil – India is the world's largest producer, processor and exporter of castor oil (accounting for over 80% of the global market) and yet farmers and traders are not capitalising on this position.

Our Smart Short Course will take delegates through the entire oils and fats production process including seed preparation and crush, extraction and refining (degumming, bleaching, deodorisation). Of interest will be some of the modules on the processing of domestic oils such as rice bran oil and castor oil. Also of interest will be a paper on how to reduce the occurrence of 3-MCPD, 2-MCPD and glycidyl esters (GE) in edible oil processing, as there has been growing concern about the formation of these harmful process contaminants during oil refining.

OFI it's the perfect place for who wants to grow up in the industry making contacts and promoting a brand.Could you give some advice?

I always try to be polite to anyone I meet, to smile and to show a real interest in their company and what they do. Never be late and it’s important to be patient. In India, I use titles and surnames/last names, as using the first name is too informal. As in most Asian cultures, I never use my feet to point towards anything as is considered rude.

In what way gives OFI India support to the industry?

We provide a meeting and networking point where everyone in our industry can get together and do business, and meet new contacts.
