CRU World Aluminium Conference: the trade show

Excess production from new projects in China is adding to the inventory overhang in an industry already dealing with structural oversupply. The scale of the reshaping of the industry is unprecedented, and by 2018, three Chinese provinces are forecast to produce over 80% of total global production. High-cost capacity is not closing at a sufficiently fast rate, despite many operations making loses at current prices. Further complicating the situation, China’s role as the main driver of global aluminium consumption and economic growth is changing, and its demand growth is set to slow further in the second half of this decade.
