Don't miss the business presentations at OFI India 2017

As the world’s largest edible oil importer, it couldn't be a better place than India to host OFI. Completed with different conferences and a smart short course, this trade fair brings the opportunity to local and international attendees to discover the last trends and innovations in oil and fats industry.

What do you think are the strong and weak points of the industry? What are the future goals?

Our event is organised around the oils and fats industry, both globally and in India. Oils and fats are an essential commodity – we all need to eat, and we all need edible oils. Therefore, there will always be demand for this product. The challenge is how to meet increasing demand (led by an increasing global population and a growing middle class with better incomes). The future goals of our industry are how to increase production of oilseeds and edible oils sustainably and on limited land resources.

Why is OFI India different from other similar shows?

We are bringing together all players in our industry, both on the commercial side and on the technical side. Most other oils and fats events (both in India and other parts of the world), usually only focus on the commercial or technical side.

Your fair has conferences and courses to improve the attendee's experience.Could you tell us something more about that?

There are a lot of exciting presentations in both our conferences which will be a highlight in terms of promoting debate and providing a learning opportunity.

In our Business Congress, a lot of our presentations will look at where oils and fats prices will be heading in 2017/18, and the supply and demand picture for the key edible oils in the world – palm oil, soyabean oil, rapeseed oil and sunflower oil.

India is the world’s largest edible oil importer, with an oil and oilseed turnover of US$25bn and import-export turnover of some US$13bn. Its demand for edible oils is some 21M tonnes/year, but it only produces 7-8M tonnes/year and must import around 14-15M tonnes/year (some 70%) of its edible oil needs, valued at over US$12bn.

A few of our business presentations will focus on how India can increase its oilseed and edible oil production. For example, does biotechnology have a role in boosting soybean production? What can really be done about small farm sizes, which prevents economies of scale? Can irrigation be improved? And what can be done to help farmers adopt technology to improve productivity? There is one estimate that adoption of the improved technology could result in a 50% increase in soya yields including the use of certified seeds, replacement of seed every three years, proper soil nutrient management, farm mechanisation and efficient water management through micro-irrigation.

Another interesting focus will be on castor oil – India is the world's largest producer, processor and exporter of castor oil (accounting for over 80% of the global market) and yet farmers and traders are not capitalising on this position.

Our Smart Short Course will take delegates through the entire oils and fats production process including seed preparation and crush, extraction and refining (degumming, bleaching, deodorisation). Of interest will be some of the modules on the processing of domestic oils such as rice bran oil and castor oil. Also of interest will be a paper on how to reduce the occurrence of 3-MCPD, 2-MCPD and glycidyl esters (GE) in edible oil processing, as there has been growing concern about the formation of these harmful process contaminants during oil refining.

OFI it's the perfect place for who wants to grow up in the industry making contacts and promoting a brand.Could you give some advice?

I always try to be polite to anyone I meet, to smile and to show a real interest in their company and what they do. Never be late and it’s important to be patient. In India, I use titles and surnames/last names, as using the first name is too informal. As in most Asian cultures, I never use my feet to point towards anything as is considered rude.

In what way gives OFI India support to the industry?

We provide a meeting and networking point where everyone in our industry can get together and do business, and meet new contacts.
